Review: Alice’s Adventures In Steamland

“He was a March hare, a species filling any job that permitted marching, which they were obsessed with.” –Alice’s Adventures in Steamland: The Clockwork Goddess If you have ever wanted to read something truly bonkers then try Alice’s Adventures in Steamland: The Clockwork GoddessA. This has to be one of the strangest tales I have ever read – and that’s including the psychedelic tale that is Gregory Maguire’s WickedA. If I had actually thought to check out author, Wol-vriey‘sA. I would have maybe got an inkling of what to expect. His portfolio includes titles such as “Vegan Zombie Apocalypse” and the “Bizarro 101” flash fiction stories. […]

As Time Goes By 1

All the world’s a stage, and all the men and women merely players: they have their exits and their entrances; and one man in his time plays many parts, his acts being seven ages. – William Shakespeare, As You Like it  I find the ticking of the clock in my living room strangely comforting, even as it slices my existence into anthropocentric made-up units of time.  People treat time as the enemy: it goes too fast when we are enjoying ourselves and too slowly when we want something over and done with.  It changes our bodies in ways that we don’t want, […]

2015: When it’s all said and done

“An optimist stays up until midnight to see the new year in. A pessimist stays up to make sure the old year leaves.” – Bill Vaughan So now we’re reaching the end of one of the most confusing times of the year and people are announcing to the world their New Year’s Resolutions (or their intention to not have any) for 2016.  There’s going to be loads of “Year in Review” type articles/posts appearing across the world.  This isn’t one of them. Before we go any further, I want credit Michelle who answered my plea to twitter for inspiration after suffering mega […]

The only time people are binary

“There are only 10 types of people in the world: those who understand binary, and those who don’t.” – Unknown I have recently become rather obsessed with understanding binary code. I think it stems from being intrigued by binary clocks (I just got a binary coded decimal (BCD) clock home screen widget on my Android phone).  Anyway, I pulled my finger out and I can now read binary numbers, albeit not as quickly as I would read in my “native” decimal.  Next stop is the binary alphabet…. Binary numbers are actually strangely calming.  I have been having some minor coping wobbles lately and having something […]

Tea-trays in the sky.

“Contrariwise, if it was so, it might be; and if it were so, it would be; but as it isn’t, it ain’t. That’s logic.” – Lewis Carroll I’ll be honest, today’s post very nearly didn’t happen.  I’m tired and cranky and suffering from serious writers block.  I sought inspiration from the search engine pixies again and, with a nod to one of my favourite films, set off with the phrase “down the rabbit hole”. And down we did go.  In amongst the masses of links and images the phrase spawned was some artwork which I fell in love with instantly.  That […]
